We joked, ‘Well, we have a Plan B, because you can only leave wounded or dead.’ No one wants to leave dead. Everyone wants to go home and get the hell out of there. So, ‘Well, guys. Plan B?’ I say, ‘Just don’t miss. Shoot at the meat, where else?’ Immediately, blood gushed out. We blocked the leg with tourniquets, but still the blood gushed out. The whole leg is bloody, hot. The whole shoe, well, you feel it squelching. First, they shot at me, then at the comms man, in his thigh. And the sniper looked at us and thought, ‘Well, what the hell? Scary.’ Yes, he changed his mind after looking at us. I joke that I gave birth to myself. Look. The thing is that when a woman gives birth to a child, she experiences very intense pain and gives new life. I gave myself life after going through very intense pain.” ASSOCIATED PRESS 5. You only have two options.’ I said that neither option suits me and turned around to leave. I didn’t even ask if I could leave, just turned around and started leaving. Naturally, they understood that I was a great runner. You see, I was thinking they might let me go and in the end, they'd say that was daring for leaving so boldly. The feeling was devastation, inner devastation. Like there’s no more hope. It’s gone, 100% gone. I realize there are rockets flying. I mean, in 2023, in 2022, rockets flying! I immediately made a decision that I would not support it in any way. Not even move my little finger to support what has begun.” ASSOCIATED PRESS 7. And a minute later, the curtain closed behind me. They asked me, ‘Are you on the wanted list?’ At that moment, I turned completely pale, and cold sweat began to flow over me. A man in civilian clothes came in and started asking questions about what happened to me. I said, ‘No, I’m not on any wanted list. There must be some mistake.’ But then he started saying, ‘You are my Muslim brother. I am also against the war. Tell me everything.’ For some reason, I trusted him and talked.” ASSOCIATED PRESS 9. ANIMATION shows how vaccines work against viruses like COVID-19

(16 Mar 2020) LEAD IN: U.S. researchers gave the first shot to the first person in a test of an experimental coronavirus vaccine today - leading off a worldwide hunt for protection even as the pandemic surges. Millions of dollars are being spent to enable scientists worldwide to fast track a vaccine for COVID-19. Pharma companies and researchers are taking different approaches to how they develop a vaccine. Here is an illustration of how they work. STORY-LINE: Vaccines train our bodies to recognize and fend off germs before they make us sick. Traditionally, vaccines are made using viruses that have been killed or weakened, like vaccines against the flu or measles. But growing viruses is labor-intensive and sometimes risky. Now scientists are using newer and faster technologies to create different types of vaccines against COVID-19.   There's no chance people could get infected from the shots because they don't contain the virus itself. The target: a spikey protein that covers the new coronavirus. That protein lets the virus invade human cells. If the body's immune system recognizes the spike and blocks it, people won't get infected. One way is to copy a section of the virus' genetic code that instructs cells to make the spike protein. Stick that "messenger RNA" into a vaccine. The person's own cells will make the harmless protein. Then the immune system will spot the foreign proteins and make antibodies to attack them. Another method is called a DNA vaccine. Genetic code for the spike protein is put into what's called a plasmid, a circular piece of synthetic DNA, and used as a vaccine. Both approaches prime the immune system to attack again if the real virus ever comes along. Whatever type of vaccine ultimately works, it likely will be 12 to 18 months before it's ready for widespread use. ================== The Associated Press Health & Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Department of Science Education.
